GOSSIP - August 2023

Next weekend is the last for the final play of the first season of Hackmatack Playhouse under new management (Founder Carlton Guptill's grandsons, Aram and Conor, taking the reign from their dad Michael Guptill).
I wasn't able to review Godspell, the current piece. BUT the first two of this summer's trio were really smartly put together, which speaks well for the company (see reviews for Tick Tick Boom, and Mark Twain's Folly). Check out the Godspell review from our guest writer, Joel Plagenz, HERE.
So, go. Go and enjoy theater in the barn in the field at the farm - it's a real memory making experience, a quintessential throwback New England event. Plus, GO. Support the latest iteration of one of the seacoast's theater gems, and be part of ensuring its future. Get all the intel at https://www.hackmatackplayhouse.org/

As ArtPortNH followers know, the Gossip Column has been on break since a few months back. Hence there's been no art news outside theater reviews. While this little tidbit stays with the theater theme, it allows a shoutout for the incredible Portsmouth NH 400's year long effort! See their full schedule here at portsmouthnh400.org

On Thursday, Aug. 24, Theatre by the Sea: A Red-Carpet Gala Honoring Portsmouth Theatrical Past will take the stage as part of the PortsmouthNH400 celebration, at the historic St. John’s Lodge, 351 Middle St. in Portsmouth.
Theatre by the Sea (1965 to 1987) was once the oldest, year-round, nonprofit, professional Equity theater company in Northern New England. The one-night only event is created by longtime Seacoast thespian Michael J. Tobin (current founding Executive Artistic Director of Footlights Theatre in Falmouth, Maine, who worked at the theater as a young man. The gala will start at 6 p.m. with a “meet, greet and reminisce” beverage bar. The two-hour show begins at 7 p.m. In keeping with the evening’s theatrics, dress for the event has been billed as “informally formal, fashionably fun.” "People who have never heard of Theatre by the Sea will be captivated by the stories and amused by the anecdotes," Tobin said. "The playbill of entertainment will have something for everyone."

Jon Kimball, who joined the company in 1968 and was its artistic director from 1974 to 1983, is the guest of honor and will be joined by other former TBS performers, Scott Weintraub and Ginny Russell, along with other notables from the theater community. There will also be tributes to longtime Theatre by the Sea favorite, Tom Celli, Prescott Park/NHAA icon, Grace Casey, and other faces familiar to theater goers during that critical time in the evolution of Portsmouth’s arts scene. Tickets are $20 per and can be purchased by calling (207) 400-7153 or emailing your request to tbsevent@aol.com
